WHAT WE’RE TALKING ABOUT: PACKING FOR AN ISLAND GETAWAY
Psst. I have a secret to share with you. Packing for an island getaway doesn’t have to be chaotic and stressful!
Just a short while ago, I embarked upon one of my most epic trips yet to Necker Island. Yes, as in Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island!
In celebration of this, I’ve decided to share my no-fail formula to packing for the ultimate island hopping getaway which I’ve perfected over many years and miles.
To all of my crazy busy fashionistas, I give you:
The Savvy Gal’s Last Minute Packing Bible
Being prepared is not about stuffing your suitcase. It’s about being practical, nimble, and savvy. Ditch the temperamental linen pants and go for more “Sex and the City”-esque.
Are you ready to nail the effortless vacation look once and for all? The essentials I’ve included here are a high-low mix — use this list as inspiration and tailor it to your lifestyle!
Let the force of LEP (Light Effective Packing) begin!
SO WHAT SHOULD YOU PACK FOR THE PERFECT ISLAND GETAWAY?
You may be headed for an island getaway but don’t get too carefree just yet! It’s all about structure and order, ladies, especially when you need to keep your essentials easily accessible whilst travelling. This Valentino camera bag will keep your belongings in place (no more “misplaced” passports or makeup strewn about) without looking mumsy.
Travel with a suitcase that’s both light and durable, like the Samsonite Firelite Spinner. Samsonite cases have smooth wheels, pack well, and they’ve never once let me down.
THE BEACH BAG
How many times have you unpacked your designer straw beach bag only to find it squashed and ruined? Avoid this dilemma by packing this tropical Agua Bendito bag instead. Neat, nimble, and multipurpose – it can double as your day bag.
FOR THE PLANE
When you’re heading onto your flight, wear loose gear – that means no zips, belts, or buckles. Make it all about loungewear that’ll allow you to relax and stay cosy. That being said, leave your ratty sweats and worn-out yoga pants at home and invest in something a bit chicer!
- Cashmere socks. Trust me – that little feeling of luxury on your feet when you’re 7 hours into a 12-hour flight will make all the difference!
- A silk eye mask, because there’s always that one person who insists on having the window shade all the way up!
- If you have trouble sleeping on planes (like, 90% of us), try a subtle relaxing fragrance on your pillow. Deep Sleep Pillow Spray is infused with calming essential oils.
- And for you brave and quirky souls out there, I dare you to bring this on the plane!
Airplane air is notoriously drying so keep your skin fresh and dewy with a hydrating mist (I’m a huge fan of MAC’s Mineralize Charged Water). Be minimalistic with your vacation makeup essentials and fit them into the Hold Me Baby Bag.
Tip: Think travel size and leave your full makeup kit at home! An island getaway means less makeup. Smaller versions of your essentials will easily see you through at least 2 weeks.
Tote around your favourite fragrances without the weight of the bottles by using Sen7 atomizers.
This atomizer is a teensy 37g (compared to the average 300g of a perfume bottle!), holds 5.8ml and is TSA approved. I have 3 of these in different colours to go with my 3 fave scents: Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille, Agent Provocateur, and my daytime go-to Jo Malone Mimosa and Cardamom.
Noise-cancelling/noise-reduction headphones like Beats are an absolute must for me when I travel. They’re well worth the investment and this rose gold pair? So chic!
And finally, let’s avoid every traveller’s worst nightmare – lost luggage. A luggage tracker like Trakdot will provide you some peace of mind when you can’t spot your suitcase on the carousel.
FOR THE BEACH
We might be chilling on the beach but that doesn’t mean you want to look dowdy in some shapeless muumuu.
Upgrade from that tired bikini you’ve been sporting since who-remembers-when and try one of these lovelies:
I am all about this dress by Maje. The pleats hide extra creases, the colour is gorgeous, and it’s absolutely effortless. Frolic around in a printed crepe romper from Hale Bob that works with flats, wedges, heels, you name it. It’s versatile and easy to pack, plus its playful nature is perfect for an island getaway. Done.
SHOES AND SUNNIES
Protect your eyes and prevent wrinkles by finishing off your island look with a fun pair of sunnies from Sama Eyewear .
Feel good bonus: They donate a portion of their annual profits to an NPO benefitting at-risk youth and when you have the time, you should read the story on why.
Don’t forget all of your essential lotions and potions. The last thing you want is to break out because the replacement cream you had to buy from the local shop doesn’t agree with your skin!
You might also consider including a hydrating and calming face mask from Dr. Jart+ for post-flight or post-beach!
I also swear by the Click n Curl – it’s a round brush with a removable handle and detachable ceramic vented roller heads. It works AND you won’t scald yourself! Speaking of hair, if your hair misbehaves in humidity, definitely pack a leave-in cream with frizz control like Redken’s Frizz Dismiss Rebel Tame.
Vino lovers will definitely want to consider taking along a Wine Wand. What is it, you ask? Take a look here and then tell me you wouldn’t want it in your bag so that you can drink fine wine wherever you travel. (Because that airline wine needs all the help it can get!)
So there you have it – a snapshot of the essentials you’ll need during your island hopping experience!
The rest is about playing hard and making sure you #indulgeinlife.
